Thank you for visiting my webpage. Back in 2007 myself and a good friend, Dr Nigel Hywel-Jones from Bangkok, sat down and discussed the skeleton of a book I had written about my experiences in the Thailand Tsunami of 2004.
We both felt that my story should be told and I was keen to set up a foundation with the profits as I had been disillusioned with the flow of money that had come through the months following the disaster and where they ended up.
We researched the logistics of getting my book published and soon realised that finding a publisher was only half the battle. Once we found one, we had the issue of complicated contracts and distribution rights. I had considered the writing of this book as my personal project and was very reluctant to allow a third, or fourth, or fifth party to dictate where, and who, I could sell my book and for how much. It seemed, to me, the obvious thing to do was self-publish. And so Big Wave Publications was set up in Singapore in 2008 by myself and Nigel. The rationale then was that we could control better the direction the book was going to take.
Please enjoy navigating your way around our site and my webpage. If you were directly affected by the tsunami then Nigel and I would be interested in hearing from you as we plan a special edition for the fifth anniversary in December 2009. Especially, if you were on Koh Phi Phi on December 26 we would very much like to discuss and learn your story and to then consider how this might be brought to a wider attention.
Best wishes
Aaron
